WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY

Dear All

I sent up most of the unrestored vintage furniture onto a 24-footer lorry to my restorer on Monday. Half will be back in Singapore before 12 June. They are pieces already booked. The rest will be in Kuala Lumpur over the next few weeks. It’s always a great relief to me whenever the furniture went out. The week before shipment is the toughest, because it means packing and packing and packing and squeezing through stacks of furniture and boxes.

The day of shipment is the craziest, because it means coming very early in the morning to ensure that no one takes up the parking lots which I have booked with URA the day before. Also waiting for the Malaysian registered lorry to come is really tense because you can never be certain when they will turn up. If it gets stuck at the custom, my workers would have to wait for hours. There were occasions, when we brought the furniture out and only to be told that the lorry could not turn up. You really feel like crying. Loading as many stuff as possible onto the lorry is also a great challenge. My workers, fortunately, have developed the skills to really jam packed the lorry with as many pieces as possible, maximising the space, without damaging the goods, the only way to save cost and to make the shipment worthwhile.

The most beautiful feeling is when, after hours of loading, we put in that one last piece and the canvas is finally drawn and securely tightened and the lorry moves. I used to curse at those big Malaysian lorries that cause jams at the causeway, now one of those could be ours. And I’m so proud of it.

Shipping the furniture to Malacca and Kuala Lumpur, means less pieces in Singapore and the urgent need to stock up really fast. So I made my rounds yesterday, nervous whether we will get good pieces and uncertain whether we can come back with a full lorry load. It turned out to be a wonderful Wednesday for us.
