MID CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE: SIMPLICITY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME

For many of my discerning friends and customers, simplicity is the name of the game, in their quest for furniture and furnishings for a dream place called home. The quest naturally brings them to mid century modern furniture of the 50's - 60's.  They are in love with the simple, uncluttered and quiet elegance of furniture of this period. The furniture seems suited for modern living whether they grace a small apartment or a sprawling bungalow. 

Interestingly,  the simplicity of these furniture, somehow, gives room for greater freedom of expression in terms of furnishings.  The retro design fabrics of this period, with their usually bright, vibrant colours create  an excitement without overpowering nor negating the quiet elegance of most of mid century modern furniture. Called it a paradox of mid century modern style and design.

Below are some  mid century modern inspired sideboards that we bespoked for our discerning customers, who unable to find the perfect vintage piece but nevertheless insisted on a mid century modern design that will perfectly fit the space they have in mind. For them, simplicity is the name of the game and they had fun reinterpreting and recreating the mid century modern designs.  I learnt much from them too.

I listed, too,  some real vintage mid century pieces we found and from which we were inspired.  They have been lovingly restored to its original elegance.

A long sideboard we custom made for Patrick and Elaine.  It was tough for 

us to find vintage teak of   200 cm. Part of the back was cut out to

 exact specification for the couple to inset their plugs and 

cables. L200 x D45 x H57 cm.

Another lovely mid century modern sideboard, custom made for

 Lopez and Sheryl.  Ben and Rachel love it so much that we are 

making one for them. L 180 x 35 x H54 cm

Long and low, that's what CK wanted.  No handles too.  Simply slated drawers

at the sides that hide a groove for easy pull out.

For the limited space Chin Chin has, she requested a dimension of 140 x 40 x 42 cm

and brass caps for a polished finish.  We had to custom made the brass caps too.

An open console for Zaidi who insisted on long sexy tapered legs

Long slim sideboard we crafted with solid vintage teak at Second Charm.

 A designer didn't hesitate to take both pieces available then.

One of our popular mid century modern designed sideboards. We made a few of 

different dimensions as requested.  Length ranges from 160-190 cm. This piece

 was made from vintage teak with lovely, swirling wood grains.

Beautifully crafted for Sharon.  Almost seamless and fuss free. 

Instead of slanted tapered legs, Sharon prefers the above legs.

Another lovely vintage sideboard/book cabinet. Steve, too had asked us to  

look for big wall unit like this.  Though he loves the piece that Isaac took,

he did not hesitate on this piece.

All our bespoke pieces are made from vintage solid teak. Vintage teak is the best as they are matured, seasoned teak, doesn't cracked easily and often come with beautiful wood grains.  Give us some time, though, to bring you the best.
