OF RETRO, ART DECO & ANTIQUE BEDS - CIRCA 1920''S -70'S

Dear All
A young couple who recently visited my blog and subsequently my shop in Singapore, is interested in a Retro 1960's solid teak queen sized bed. I informed her that we have quite a few vintage beds, some as early as 1920's 4-poster wooden or brass and cast iron beds, as well as the Art Deco beds of the 1940's and 50's, and of course the Retro's bed of the 60's, all original pieces and in solid teak. Some have already been restored, some still in their original conditions - all waiting to be discovered.
Since we dont have the space to display all the beds available at SECOND CHARM, I promised them to post the pictures so as to give them greater choice of the range that we carry. I know some of us have reservation about using vintage beds, but I can assure you that a fully restored bed is as good as a new bed. All that is needed to exorcise the reservation, is a good comfortable mattress. What more, these restored beds come in solid teak with wooden timber strip base instead of plywoods. The Art Deco beds of the 50's are especially made of old Burmese teak of about 1 inch thickness and come with beautiful woodgrains characteristic of mature teak unlike modern mass Indonesian teak reproduction furniture. Beautifully restored to their original granduer of the 20's or elegance and simplicity of the midcentury modern, these beds will last another generation. Its passing of tradition and a legacy of lasting memories.
Below are some of the antique beds of the 1920's, Art Deco beds of the 1940's and 50's and Retro beds of the 60's.
My 14-year old daughter sleeps in this vintage 1940's Art Deco super single bed. She loves the idea its a vintage piece but insists we paint it white. She has been sleeping on vintage bed as long as she can remember and I'm reserving a 1920's french marquetry queen size bed for her wedding!

This is a rare 1960's -70's single bed. Beautifully carved from a piece of thick Burmese teak wood. In the last 9 years of business, this is the first piece I come across such a bed. Its a rare combination to have carved bed frames with pencil and metal capped legs. The piece was obviously made with pride. My feeling is, it is a specially designed customized piece, probably one of a kind.

A beautiful rare white and black formica Queen size retro bed of the 60's. It comes with a matching 2-door wardrobe and a dressing, all in solid teak and vintage white and black formica. Sold full set in Kuala Lumpur to a lady named Barbara. Let me know if you want to see the dresser and the cupboard. Can post you the pictures separately.

Another unique Retro queen size bed of the 60's. The high back make it different from the normal retro bed of the same period. Under the vintage formica is solid teak wood. Sometimes, we strip the formica because the teak wood is too beautiful to be hidden under it, unless its a really colourful pink, green or blue formicas.

This is one of the most popular Retro beds of the 60's. Retro lovers go crazy over the curved edges with the characteristic metal piping and the slim elegant pencil legs, particularly if they have metal caps. There's matching cupboard and dresser to this type of bed.

A pretty pink formica Retro queen size bed of the sixties. Solid teak. Also available is a matching dresser in similar pink formica. A matching 2-door pink wardrobe was sold yesterday in Singapore.

A Retro 1960's solid teak queen size bed with high back and pull out drawers.

A pretty queen size Retro head board of the 60's. Solid teak with vintage maroon PVC. which is still in good condition. The other end of the bed frame comes with pencil legs. Its very much a period piece.

A 1960's retro teak single bed. Fully restored for a customer.

An antique brass and cast iron bed of the 1920's if not earlier. In black and gold finish. Three sided brass panels. Makes a lovely day bed, adorning a patio

A dainty vintage white 4-poster cast iron bed.

A late 19th century- early 1920's four poster wooden bed. 3 sided with marquetry panels. Size varies. Slight longer or shorter than queen size bed. Need a custom made mattress. However, its not a problem. A custom made mattress does not necessarily cost more than a normal good one, actually. Have done a few for some customers who must have at least one antique bed at home.

A lovely Art Deco 1940's teak bed. The curved bed frames are very attractive. Will look beautiful once fully restored.
An Art Deco Bed of the the 1950's. The 2-tone is characteristic of the Art Deco furniture of the period. They usually have beautiful woodgrains because of the Burmese teak from which they are made of.

Another Art Deco 1950's queen sized bed. The top of the headboard has a plain green formica. The compartments are useful. Unrestored as yet.

A single Art deco bed of the 1950's. Unrestored.
