Dear All
Surprise finds marks the nature of this business. We never know what we will get, how often they come by and when the next vintage finds will be. Whether furniture, decorative items, antiques, uniques, collectibles, paintings, books, handmade carpets and designers'pieces; such finds keep the adrenalin going and the hardwork worth doing.
A few days ago, I got that surprise find. What were they? 7 vintage hanging lamp shades of the 40's -60's, if not earlier and in very good condition. An indication of their age, are the solid brass and bakelites fixtures and the use of latch-on instead of the modern screw-on bulbs. These simple but beautifully crafted lights were often used in Malay, peranakan and colonial homes of the past. I had seen the lights being arranged in a row over a dining table or hanged at different levels. In some instance, a pulley system with a big white oval porcelain piece was attached to the lamp so that it can be lowered or raised according to one's need. If one uses the clear, transparent bulb, the light radiates a warmth glow to a place. A really charming piece of the past.
Below are pictures of those lights.
Big round globe with brass trimmings and fixtures. Not that old but will blend in with the vintage lamp shades above. 3 pcs available. Sold 2 pieces to Jessie today. Since she was looking for hanging lamps, we informed her when the lights came in. Glad she likes these ones. 2 pieces for $150.
With "Henry Blunn & Co" embossed inside the trunk (L25 x W16 and D12 inches). We had gotten this kind of trunks before but the surprise find was a piece of sticker with Jawi scriptures on the inside of it. A sure relic of Malaya days. (Jawi is the Malayo-arabic scripts widely used by Malays of South east asia before Independence). Amongst some collectors in Kuala Lumpur, anything with Jawi scripts are greatly hunted. Once, a collector was willing to pay RM25 for just a small vintage F & N glass because it has Jawi inscriptions on it.
