Wow – do I have a show blog post for you!
First up are Olga’s afghans!
This is either the third or fourth year we’re had these hand-crafted beauties for sale at Ashley Furniture! Olga is part of our older adult program at our center in Carol Stream (Outreach Community Center). She needs oxygen which makes it hard to get out. Thankfully, she loves to crochet so sitting in her apartment making beautiful afghans is a wonderful way to spend her time. However, yarn is expensive and she’s run out of friends and family members to give them to. What to do?
Henny has been Olga’s friendly visitor for years. It’s a simple program that matches someone with the time to visit an older adult with an older adult. Henny approached me about selling Olga’s afghans at Ashley Furniture and the rest is – as they say – history!
Olga has two sizes this year – a smaller lap afghan which is priced $25 and a larger afghan for $35. All the money goes directly to Olga.
Here are some photos of the 16 afghans Olga made this year!
Amazing, right?
Now here’s SOME of the new-to-us furniture you’ll find today from 1 to 8 and tomorrow from 9 to 4 at Ashley Furniture!
fabulous vintage American of Martinsville dresser w/mirror – dresser is missing two pulls/knobs – priced $65
this Room & Board four piece sectional is from their York Collection – using a R&B catalog from 2010 the retail price is $3,900 – the sectional includes a left arm sofa; right arm sofa; corner piece; armless sofa – all in a fabulous neutral micro-suede that’s in excellent condition (I saw one minor shadow of a stain on one side of the flip-able seat cushions) – Ashley Furniture price is $1,195 – that’s 70% OFF of the retail price from three years ago!
I love the mottled finish on these four chairs from Kreiss – priced $200 for all four
fantastic funky swivel chairs priced $75 each – need a good vacuuming but otherwise in great condition
this is an amazing leather sofa – can’t tell if it’s a dark, dark, dark blue or black – from a distance looks perfect – sit on it and you can see where the leather is coming away from the seat cushion seams (and the seat cushions are attached – so not a super easy fix). Priced $95 due to someone needing to be creative about this issue
I marked all of this wicker as “white” but all the pieces except the rocker are a softer off-white – there’s a side chair priced $35 (and there are two of them and each are priced $35); loveseat for $60; oval coffee table for $20; white wicker rocker is $50
wonderful Broyhill bedroom collection – long, low dresser w/2 mirrors for $125; queen size headboard and frame for $50; two drawer nightstand priced $40 and there are two of them (priced $40 each)
sweet upholstered bench priced $75
six solid metal chairs with upholstered seat – would be great candidates to spray paint and reupholster! – priced $120 for all six (that’s $20 a chair – not bad!)
man oh man – these are FABULOUS leather stools – basket-weave pattern makes them very durable (and look great too) – a few minor dings on the wood that would be easy to touch up otherwise the leather has only improved with use – priced $245 for all four
another set of fun swivel chairs – these are also priced $75 each
set of three nesting tables priced $60 for the set
black (I’m sure this time) micro-suede Crate and Barrel sofa priced $95 – in great condition but needs to be cleaned
one of our very own volunteers, Judy, donated this gorgeous dining room set from Lexington – we have a table with two leaves and six chairs priced $395; rolling LIGHTED (I’ve never seen a buffet that had a light in it!) buffet for $95; two piece lighted china cabinet for $295 – in the photo there’s a window valance on the top of the china cabinet which is priced $10 (last photo is a peek under the valance so you can see what the top edge looks like)
LOVE this retro desk which is priced $85
Okay – bear with me – this is truly an amazing vintage dining room set by B.P. John – but it’s not set up to look so great so you’re going to have to see beyond the leaves and table pads that are piled on the drop leaf table – this set includes: a drop leaf table w/3 leaves, 6 chairs and table pads – priced $495; the matching two piece china cabinet is $375 – all in great condition (I noticed one of the arm chairs had a wiggly arm that should be an easy fix)
wonderful Baker coffee table with protective glass top priced $65
gorgeous, amazing brass arch floor lamp with FIVE arms coming out of the marble base – priced $125
sweet painted three drawer dressers – there are two of them and each is priced $60
here’s an United brand retro dresser with mirror priced $85; matching full size headboard, footboard and side rails for ??? (forgot to write down the price – my guess is $65)
American Drew chest of drawer (which needs a minor fix) priced $135; matching dresser (no mirror) also priced $135
Nate and Gordon were working right by the American Drew furniture and I couldn’t resist snapping a photo of these “twins." I then asked Teresa – another regular volunteer without whom we’re not sure the store could even operate – to join the guys for a photo. The most amazing part of this whole thing is there are, easily, another dozen or more volunteers who also give a huge amount of their time, energy and talents to make Ashley Furniture both the visually attractive (ahem – that might be a stretch but for a warehouse it looks pretty good) and fun place to shop! A week ago, Nate said something about how we’re family – and it’s true. I love them all and am so grateful for their help with running the store but also for their friendship.
And that seems like a proper place to end this Friday before Thanksgiving post! Add in you – dear reader - my donors and my customers and you have a fairly complete list of what I’m most grateful for!
REMEMBER – Ashley Furniture WILL BE OPEN both the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving! See you here next week!
