note: this post was ready to go at 8:45 a.m. but, unfortunately, blogger was down and there was nothing I could do (except repeatedly – somewhat compulsively - keep checking the site and get more and more anxious and maybe mutter darkly under my breath, maybe). Sorry!
A friend who works with her husband in Côte d'Ivoire (also called the Ivory Coast) in Africa is currently in the United States to attend several graduations. Capital city, Abidjan – where Laura lives - has seen a lot of unrest most recently when incumbent President, Laurent Gbagbo, refused to accept his defeat and a violent stalemate followed. Though Gbagbo has now been captured and life is slowly returning to normal (to read more about the conflict go here), all that to say, Laura lives in a different world than I do - has seen and been through things I hope I never see or have to live through.
Yet recently when I asked Laura what differences have struck her the most this time returning to the U.S. – her answer was immediate, “How lush and green everything is. How clean!”. I know Laura could go on about the abundant of food choices we have, the conveniences, the lack of political unrest…yet the first thing she mentioned was our landscape.
And though I’ve very much been appreciating, and admiring, the flowering trees, lovely flowers and green lawns – I’ve also been complaining of 90 degree heat and needing to hire goats to chew down my knee-high grass! Laura’s nice comment about where I live was a gentle reminder for me to be thankful for some of the things that I either overlook or choose to see as a negative instead of positive.
Have you overlooked the amazing used furniture store that located in Carol Stream, Illinois called Ashley Furniture? Have you contacted me about a specific item only to learn it’s been sold and now you’re down on Ashley? Gosh, I hope not!
Okay, that wasn’t my best segue into showing you the latest gems you’ll find today (Friday) from 1 to 8 or tomorrow (Saturday) from 9 to 4 – but awkward IS my middle name! Let’s take a look-see!
cream colored leather sofa for $85
gorgeous red leather three piece sectional with several issues: arm rest is coming away from the body of the sofa (see in second photo how it’s a bit pulled away and we’re not sure how – or if – it can be repaired); I couldn’t seem to get the recliner to recline (arm coming away is part of the recliner and I don’t know if that’s why it doesn’t recline); one of the high back seat cushions is missing its filler – so sort of deflated. Leather – overall – in great shape. One section is a sleeper and donor did add a board under seat cushions to make seating firmer. Due to issues, I’ve priced this at a steal of $95
gorgeous Lazboy swivel/rocker for $145
this waist high curio cabinet is lite from the bottom and priced $135
these wonderful pieces are by Sofa Mart Originals (not familiar with that brand) and the sofa is priced $155; matching oversized chair and ottoman $145

this next bedroom set is a retro one by eMainline and first up is chest of drawer priced $95; full-size head board, foot board and side rails for $65; dresser with mirror priced $125
this is a massive – but very nice – king size head board and frame (see how there really isn’t a foot board?) in pine priced $225; king mattress and box spring are priced $95 for the set
these hand-crafted bookcases include (starting with the one on the left): bookcase with four adjustable shelves priced $75: bookcase with one drawer and a drop down desk priced $95; bookcase with one drawer and a pull-out shelf priced $85
fantastic vintage five drawer dresser priced $85

and this, my friend, is my favorite piece this week – a crushed red velvet retro chair – I couldn’t find a brand name but the black under cloth is ripped and it has the traditional flexsteel frame – priced $125 (and it’s in excellent condition)
May the beauty which is all around you thrill you anew, refresh your spirit, fill your senses and make you smile, dear reader.
Love – Susan Awkward Galbraith
