VINTAGE FURNITURE AT SECOND CHARM - POST CHINESE NEW YEAR.

Dear All

Hope all of you had a great Chinese New Year break.  I was away during that period for a full week from 29 Jan to 5 Feb, not for a holiday as most of you think, but a working trip actually to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,  travelling to 4 cities -  Riyadh, Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah.  Because, it was an official business trip with the one  of the Chambers of Commerce here, we got to stay in some of the best hotels there, one of which is the newly opened Raffles Makkah Hotel -  a luxury that small business people like us enjoy when we tagged along the big boys.
Raffles Makkah Hotel is true to the spirit of Raffles Hotel Singapore - an epitome of luxury, granduer and opulence.  From its state of the art furniture and furnishing to the super fine attentions to details such as custom made embroidered shoe bags and toilet roll covers , spa indulgence toiletries, not to say the excellent attentive services - it  really deserves to be considered, a class of its own.

Below are some of the pictures I took on that business trip, relating only to furniture and furnishings, that I thought might interest you.  Attached too are vintage furniture, some of them nicely restored, in SECOND CHARM Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, the last two weeks.  New pieces were pretty slow lately because most of the regular runners and suppliers were away for the Chinese New Year.

The wow factor is immediately set by this state -of- the-art lounge set just
as you entered the lobby of Raffles Makkah Hotel

Beautiful upholstery works for this dining table set in the suite
that each of the delegates got to stay in Raffles Makkah.

French furnishing seems to the favourite style in most of Saudi's  high places.
The picture above shows one of the many french sofa sets that furnishes  the
business lounge of Riyadh Palace Hotel. They reminded me of some of the
pieces that Second Charm gets from time to time.

A heavily gilded french console with green marble table top
in Marriott Hotel, Jeddah

A pair of gilded french armchairs in maroon velvety upholstery,
also at Marriott's

A cute set of wooden children high seats against a
beautiful wooden screen panel in Riyadh Palace Hotel.

A unique image I captured in one of the rest stops at Taif,
a mountain resort not far from Makkah.

It would be sinful not to feature a mosque, when you visit two holy cities.
While the pictures of holy mosques of Makkah and Madinah are abundant, the
picture above is that of Abdullah Abbas Mosque in Taif.  Love the serenity and simplicity of this mosque - Far from the madding crowd.

A charming handpainted wall panel in one of the restaurants in Riyadh.

A grand door of one of the mosques in Madinah

Some East Europan bent wood chairs and Scandinavian dining tables
at a rest stop in Taif.   They reminded me of  the bent wood furniture in my shop.

A genuine antique door that graced the National Museum in Riyadh.
Such a door would certainly add a lot of character to one's home.

This piece is not tapestry fabric, but one of the many brightly and beautifully
painted doors and windows of a folk theme restaurant, Nadj Village,
in Riyadh. We ate from brightly painted enamel plates too.

A grand antique decorative brass door.
an exhibit at the National Museum, Riyadh.

A 200-year old heavily carved wooden chest.
An exhibit at the National Museum, Riyadh

A beautiful  inlay chest cum sideboard in Riyadh Palace Hotel.

One of the many stone relics at the National Museums in Riyadh.

Back to SECOND CHARM Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, here are some of our latest pieces.

A vintage SINGER sewing machine leg that we painted white and gold
for Tengku Khalsom.  We also cut a bevelled edge glass top
for her.  We still have a few sewing machines legs, for those
interested.  The top can be glass, marble or wood.

A beautifully restored side display cabinet.  Vintage 60's.
Solid teak.  Dimension L120 x D43.5 x H119 cm

An art deco 1950's solid teak dresser that can be a TV cabinet.
Restored.

A vintage 1950's-60's solid teak writing desk.  Restored.
Dimension L137 x D76 x H 76 centimetres

One end of the writing desk has an extended edge that
would fit 2 chairs easily.  Ideal for a cashier's or meeting table.

A simple but perfect square teak table. L30 x D30 x H30 inches.
Restored.

A vintage 1950's teak side table.  This 2-tiered piece is certainly useful.
L24 x D18 x H30 inches

A contemporary wooden day bed.

A beautiful slightly tapered 2-door wardrobe in cream formica. Wood of
solid burmese teak with beautiful wooden grains. In good original
condition.  Need only minor touch up and lock to fix.

The inside view of the cupboard above.  Long imported mirror
on  the inside .

A pair of cane bar stools.  In good condition.

A high vintage stool. With streaks of paint.

Now that Chinese New Year break is over, we should be back for the vintage hunt and enjoying the thrills of  the finds.

Will update you soonest possible.  Till then.

Warmest regards
Sharifah
