Dear All
Monday is usually my off day. I work longest and hardest on weekends, leaving Singapore to Kuala Lumpur very early on Saturday morning and come back slightly past midnite on Sunday, at least 3 weekends in a month, savouring the one weekend of the month with my family and making up to them on weekdays.
Most of my KLites customers-turned-friends shudder at the thought. They often see me rush out of my shop late Sunday afternoon to a waiting cab about to take me to Pudu Raya Station. (thanks to Mr Wong, one of the most hardworking and reliable taxi drivers in Malaysia!). I don't travel in style like some of my business friends. When you run your own small business, keeping cost low is vital, especially when you have to do it regularly. Also because, travelling to KL by coach is still to me, the cheapest and the best way to travel. Bus coaches to Malaysia, nowadays, are big, clean, comfortable and provide good reliable services, some serving food and drinks, music, movies, games and power points for laptops. And its a great comfort to know that I'm not the only one doing this every Sunday. There are at least 6 fellow travellers, taking the same Sri Maju coach every Sunday evening. We have become friends and look out for each other.
So I really feel that I deserve Monday as my off day - time to catch up with emails and my favourite Korean dramas! (I'm a KDA if you must know - Korean Drama Addict). However, when one of my runners from Singapore called and said that he had a "lobang" for old teak furniture, I'm more than willing to sacrifice my offday. Coincidentally, my regular lorry broke down and my lorry driver, Ah Han, got hold of a bigger one for the day. We came back with a full load and left behind another batch to be collected on Thursday. Below are some of that Monday morning finds. They are available in Singapore for the next one and half months.
A rustic brass and wooden square table ( 24 x24 inches) A rustic solid wood coffee table with metal studs. (L35 x W 23.5 x H16)
One of my favourite finds of the day. A 1940's teak side table.
A rare combination of glass and teak frame square coffee table. (23.5 x 23.5)
A retro 1960's -70's solid teak coffee table. Its difficult to get a teak top retro coffee table nowadays. The transition period between the 60's and 70's usually have teak legs but plywood top.
A retro 1960's teak single seater wooden armchair. Interestingly this piece is much bigger than the standard retro sofa of the period. It could have been a customised piece. A full set consisting of 2 single seaters and a 3-seater sofa (see below) is available. The customised cushions is going to cost a bit, but worth it for the comfort and rareness of the piece.
3-seater retro sofa as part of the above set. It's broad enough to rest comfortably. A 2-piece cushions, would be ideal than a standard 6-piece
Another retro 1960's -70's single wooden armchairs. Dark stain than the normal teak wood colour. In good original condition and does not require restoration. It would certainly be cheaper than if restored. Full set of 3 + 1 + 1 available A 3-seater retro sofa. Part of the set above.
A elegant retro 1960's teak dresser in half hexagon shape with 3 panel mirrors, foldable on both ends.
A retro 1960's-70's teak wardrobe with formica front doors. Slim and elegant. In good original condition.
A retro 1960's queen sized formica teak bed. The yellow formica with flower motifs is rare and has a sunny look to it.
Another rare retro queen sized bed of the 60's -70's. A long headboard of 7 ft with decorative metal branch joining part of the headboard to the attached drawer on both sides of the bed. The attached drawers is a good substitute for bedside cabinets. So inspite of it being a long piece, it is actually space saving. (RESERVED)
Low kitchen larder or meat safe. Its a rare find in the sense that it is low and of teak wood. Normal kitchen larder is usually a tall piece and of seraya or meranti wood. This one is teak. Anyway, we sold the tall piece today in KL to Puan Rozana (see picture below). Another tall meat safe is being restored in Malacca and should be available in the next 2 weeks.
SOLD
Another happy find for the day. A long retro teak side board of 6 ft long. (L72 x W20 xH38.5). Will look beautiful once restored. Its difficult to get such a big retro piece nowadays. An architect in KL once sketched me a similar piece, asking me to lookout for one.
An interesting 1950's cabinet, combining glass cabinet and chest of drawers on one side. The plastic curtains inside is a vintage. Good original condition. (W48 x D15 x H56 inches)
Glass panel doors - 2 pieces. Makes a great divider between living and dining. Old doors and windows are highly sought after by my Malaysian customers who build big houses on big acres of land and wanting to have some character to their dream homes.
A one ply door. Seasoned white
Louvred white doors.
A foldable white door, heavy wooden piece. Ideal as bathroom doors. A great substitute to plastic bathroom doors. A coloured stained glass to replace the current frosted ones would transformed it into a beautiful piece.
Colonial style armchairs. Teak. 2 pieces available. Good original condition. Some customers go crazy for the curved arms.
We do carry preloved modern furniture of good quality, like the above.
A contemporary furniture set. 2 broad chairs and round white table. The upholstery of the chairs is of beautiful silky material. Relatively good condition. Minor touch up. Has a designer's feel to the set.
Classic French reproduction mahogany chairs. 2 pieces. The wooden frames are in good condition. May require upholstery.
Kopitiam chairs. 2 pieces. Sold one piece today to Suzy who viewed them on gumtree.sg. She bought 3 chairs, each of individual designs and period.
Vintage high back iron chairs -6 pieces available. Seats need upholstery. Unique set.
More pieces this coming Thursday, when I pick up the batch left behind.
Till my next posting, warmest regards
Sharifah
